As part of their build-up for the Classics season, Uno-X Mobility has visited the Tempo! Wind Tunnel, FUSION’s own in-house wind tunnel. The purpose: to gain an extra advantage when the weather turns nasty.
There is hardly any cyclist who doubts that aerodynamics is a key factor in modern cycling. It would also be unusual to question that a thick rain jacket will generally be less aerodynamic efficient than a normal skinsuit.
Yet when spring racing brings cold temperatures, rain and mud, additional layers are often essential to stay warm and protect performance levels.
Uno-X Mobility and FUSION jointly tested the team’s entire clothing range. The aim was to gain detailed insight into the aerodynamic properties of each product and provide riders with the best possible foundation for selecting the fastest setup in varying weather conditions.
“FUSION has already spent many hours optimizing our rainwear and outer layers ahead of this season. Nevertheless, it is beneficial for us that all products are tested in different scenarios to give our riders the best possible basis for choosing what is fastest in the given conditions,” says Casper von Folsach, Performance Coach at Uno-X Mobility.
Testing took place in FUSION’s Tempo! Wind Tunnel, where the clothing were evaluated at multiple wind speeds and in a range of riding positions to create the most accurate representation of real race situations.
”We’re convinced that a meticulous, detail-driven approach can provide Uno-X Mobility with a competitive advantage. By developing a practical guide, we help riders select the optimal combinations and clarify when conditions call for a full rain jacket and when a vest will be sufficient,” says Frederik Muff, Aero Specialist at FUSION.
The Uno-X Mobility riders have access to an extensive apparel lineup, including several types of jackets and vests with differing levels of insulation, wind protection, and water resistance. The guide compares and documents all products, so riders understand how each performs aerodynamically. During the demanding Classics season, this knowledge is expected to make a meaningful difference.
“The data clearly show that choosing the right clothing combination in cold conditions can deliver substantial gains. Two setups offering similar protection from the elements may differ significantly in aerodynamic drag. The results also revealed several surprising insights — findings we believe can give us an extra advantage when selecting equipment for upcoming races,” says Casper von Folsach.
